Graded on whether a price is published, checkable, and still true at month two — how we grade · how we verify prices
Virta Health self-pay care costs $299 a month in the first year, plus a $250 initiation fee. GLP-1 access depends on your program; the care fee does not establish a drug price.
- Coverage not verified
The verdict
Virta makes sense to consider if you want nutrition support and ongoing metabolic care, especially when an employer or health plan covers it. Its self-pay care fee is clear. Before joining for a GLP-1, confirm access to Weight Loss+, your clinical eligibility and medication coverage; enrollment in Virta alone does not settle those questions.

Pros and cons
What we like
- Publishes a first-year monthly self-pay care fee and separate initiation fee.
- Allows monthly cancellation without a cancellation penalty.
- Names the corporate and medical entities in its terms.
- Provides coaching, medical supervision and tracking alongside nutrition support.
- Distinguishes nutrition-focused Weight Loss from prescribing-enabled Weight Loss+.
What could be better
- The care fee does not establish an individual GLP-1 price.
- Employer or plan coverage and prescribing eligibility need separate confirmation.
- The second-year reduction has no public dollar amount in the current FAQ.
- Refunds have a short window and a deduction for received equipment.
- Lab work and medical clearance are required before treatment.
What it is
Virta is a virtual clinic for weight loss, prediabetes and type 2 diabetes care. Its core approach uses personalized nutritional changes, health coaching and medical supervision. The app, tracking tools and testing supplies support an ongoing care plan rather than a medication delivery purchase.
Its GLP-1 page distinguishes Virta for Weight Loss from Virta for Weight Loss+. Weight Loss emphasizes nutrition and can accompany medication. Weight Loss+ adds oral or injectable GLP-1 prescribing with nutrition support, dose adjustment and side-effect support. The page is directed at employers and health plans; it does not establish that every self-pay member receives the same prescribing benefit.
Virta also describes helping members stop GLP-1s when clinically appropriate. That is a care-team decision, not a promised outcome or a requirement everyone should follow. If continuing medication is your priority, discuss it before enrolling. Our evidence on stopping GLP-1s explains why follow-up planning matters.
The terms identify Virta Health Corp., Virta Medical P.C., Virta Medical P.A. and Virta Medical Kansas, P.A. Medical care is provided through telehealth. Enrollment requires lab work and medical clearance; the program is not simply a checkout for a chosen drug.

What it actually costs at Virta Health
The standard first-year self-pay care price is $299 a month, with a separate one-time $250 initiation fee.
The individuals page and the official self-pay FAQ agree on those figures. The FAQ says monthly billing has no required commitment period and no cancellation penalty. It describes a reduced price in a second consecutive year, but does not publish the amount. A lapse can remove eligibility for that reduced price, so do not budget a guessed second-year discount.
Self-pay includes provider supervision, coaching, education, the app and tracking tools. The initiation fee helps pay for the Starter Kit and setup. The kit and eligible supplies can include a connected scale, glucose and ketone meter, and standard testing supplies according to your treatment plan. The FAQ tells you to ask whether any particular prescription or service is included; it does not give an individual GLP-1 price.
Your employer or health plan may cover Virta with no program cost to you. That is an eligibility-dependent benefit, not a universal free plan and not proof your medication is covered. Ask whether your benefit is Weight Loss or Weight Loss+, which prescribing criteria apply, and what you pay at the pharmacy.
To stop monthly renewal, the terms require written notice to support before a charge. The FAQ says future scheduled payments stop after the cancellation request is processed. Submit the request early enough to receive confirmation before the next scheduled payment.
Refunds have a separate 14-calendar-day window after registration. The terms say a refund may be available within that period, less $300 if you received medical equipment. Refunds are sent by check and take four to six weeks. Outside that window, the terms offer no routine cancellation refund.
Who it's wrong for
- Anyone joining solely to obtain a particular GLP-1 without confirming their program’s prescribing benefit.
- Anyone seeking a quick medication-only purchase. Virta centers ongoing nutrition, tracking and clinical supervision.
- Anyone treating employer coverage of the program as guaranteed pharmacy coverage.
- Anyone who needs a known second-year care price before starting. The public FAQ describes a reduction but does not name the amount.
- Anyone expecting a full refund after trying the kit and program for several weeks. The refund window and equipment deduction limit that option.

Common questions
What does Virta Health cost without employer coverage?
Standard first-year self-pay care is $299 a month plus a one-time $250 initiation fee. Confirm the individual quote with an Enrollment Advisor.
Is Virta a GLP-1 provider?
Virta for Weight Loss+ explicitly includes oral or injectable GLP-1 prescribing. Confirm that your benefit or self-pay program includes that service and that you meet its clinical criteria.
Does the $299 Virta fee include GLP-1 medication?
The public fee covers Virta care services. The current FAQ does not establish an individual GLP-1 price and tells members to ask whether particular prescriptions are included.
Can I cancel Virta monthly?
Yes. The self-pay FAQ says there is no required commitment period or cancellation penalty. The terms require written notice before a charge; support processes the request to stop future payments.
Can I get a Virta refund?
The terms allow a possible refund within 14 calendar days of registration, less $300 if equipment was received. Refunds are by check in four to six weeks; routine refunds are not offered outside that window.
How much is Virta in the second year?
The current FAQ describes a reduced price after a consecutive first year but does not publish the amount. A lapse may mean the current standard price applies when you return.
Why we gave Virta Health a B
Read the full grading rationale
Self-pay care is publicly priced at $299 a month in the first year, plus a $250 initiation fee, with monthly billing and no cancellation penalty. The provider groups and refund terms are named. It holds at B because access to GLP-1 prescribing depends on the program and eligibility, and the care fee does not establish the medication bill. Employer coverage must be confirmed individually.
