Your GLP-1 authorization has an end date: prepare for renewal
Ask for the end date and continuation requirements on your actual approval. An initial authorization should not be treated as permanent coverage.[1]
What this comes down to
- Use the approval letter, not an assumed renewal interval.
- Find out which office owns the continuation request.
- Keep authorization, prescription renewal and payment estimates separate.
Start with the existing approval
CVS Caremark’s federal employee plan page says prior approval must be renewed periodically and points members to plan-specific criteria. This is evidence that renewal can be required, not evidence that every insurer uses the same schedule.[1]
Ask for the approval reference, exact medication, covered formulation, approval period and continuation criteria. Send those details to the prescribing office and ask when it can submit. If the office asks for records, identify exactly which records it needs instead of guessing what proves continued eligibility.
Choose a service that can do the task
Amazon One Medical states that its On-Demand Care does not support prior authorizations and recommends primary care for people hoping to use insurance for medication. A paid visit alone therefore does not establish that the service will handle renewal paperwork.[2]
See our Amazon One Medical review for that care-path distinction, based on official material read in October 2026. Ask any prospective service about continuation requests before transferring care.
Caremark’s prior-authorization guidance describes criteria questions answered by the provider or an authorized agent. Confirm the office’s submission status and obtain a reference rather than treating a patient message as proof of submission.[3]
Track three independent tasks
| Task | Confirmation to obtain |
|---|---|
| Authorization continuation | Submission reference and decision |
| Prescription renewal | Valid prescription with the needed refill |
| Pharmacy payment | Current claim estimate under the benefit |
A renewal worksheet
HealthCare.gov explains prescription exceptions and appeals. If the continuation request is denied, ask the plan for its written decision and review route. Do not assume every denial means a missing form or that paying cash resolves the appeal.[4]
- Record the approval end date in your calendar.
- Ask the office for a submission date and reference.
- Ask the pharmacy whether the new approval has reached its claim system.
If the insurance estimate leads you to consider paying cash for care, request the relevant provider’s written good faith estimate. CMS explains that this is generally available for self-pay patients and that separate providers may need separate estimates.[5]
If approval renewal falls near the insurance-year boundary, use the deductible-reset worksheet to request the next fill’s payment estimate separately.
If a valid approval is already on file but the claim still fails, investigate quantity-limit restrictions using the pharmacy’s exact rejection wording.
Questions people actually ask
How long is a GLP-1 prior authorization valid?
There is no universal interval established here. Use your own approval letter or ask the benefit administrator for the recorded end date and continuation criteria.
Can a new prescription replace an expired authorization?
Do not assume so. A prescription and the insurer’s coverage approval serve different purposes; ask the pharmacy which requirement is preventing the next covered fill.
